There are some treatment forms available for psoriatic arthritis in allopathy and also homeopathy. While homeopathy is slow to respond, allopathic medicines can do severe reaction against the body. However, Ayurveda can be an optimal way to fix psoriatic arthritis.

Ayurvedic approach to Psoriatic arthritis treatment

According to Ayurveda, Vatarakta and Kushta are two components where psoriatic arthritis can be placed. While Vatarakta is joint disorder caused due to the pathological merger of vata (life force governing movement) and rakta (blood), Kushta refers to skin disorders. On the lines of Kushta and Vatarakta Chikitsa (treatment), we proceed further.

Ayurveda can benefit with similar treatments for both Vata and Kushta related diseases. It simplifies certain skin disorders directly caused by joint disorders treated in similar strategies. Thus, we see that psoriatic arthritis is treated either by way of Kushta or Vatarakta or by combination of both. An apparent proof of skin disorder superseding joint involvement is to be treated by Kushta therapy. If the patient has visible arthritic components, we see Vatarakta as the choice.

Since Vatarakta and Kushta are two different factors, they find a good combination of the two when psoriasis and arthritis become psoriatic arthritis. These treatments are of immense use in Psoriatic arthritis in the form of herbal pastes and oils. Vatarakta also soothes the skin and muscle tissues and can be effectively handled with these external formulations:

  • Lepa –A form of medicinal paste.
  • Abhyanga – Herbal oil massage.
  • Parisheka – Medicinal liquid pouring like medicated milk, oil etc. over the afflicted areas.

In moderate arthritic conditions, these treatment are indeed helpful and the results show outstanding relief in pain and swelling. But it is the dosha type that needs to be identified and then the regimen combined with disease-modifying medicines and formulations along with a regular laxative for detoxification.

Some of the internal formulations are

Khadirodaka – Powdered form of Khadira (Acacia catechu) that is used for anointing, massage applications, bathing, drinking and eating (mixed with food).

Khadira rasa – Juice of Khadira plant (Acacia catechu) extracted from its wood, leaves and roots. Internal application of Khadira rasa mixed with juice of Indian gooseberry, ghee and honey gives amazing results internally.

  • Nimbadi Kalka – Consuming a mixture of Neem leaves and Indian gooseberry.

  • Vidangadi Kalka – Paste of Vidanga (Embeliaribes) and Bakuchi (Psoraleacorylifolia).

  • VidangadiChurna – Dried form of Vidanga (Embeliaribes), Amalaki (Emblicaofficinalis), Haritaki (Terminaliachebula), Bibhitaki (Terminaliabellirica), Pippali (long pepper) mixed in hot oil.

Panchakarma is another regimen comprised of five therapies for cleansing the body of toxins. Purification of the body has the following methods in Panchakarma:

  • Snehapana – Medicated ghee and oil application.
  • Swedana – Steaming
  • Vamana – Induced vomiting for body detoxification.
  • Virechana – Cleansing of the GI tract by Panchakarma sequence.
  • NiruhaVasti – Herbal decoction like enema mixed with honey, rock salt etc are administered through anal route.

The panchakarma treatments are designed to keep toxins in check and they build a usual routine to flush these toxins out of body before they make the blood impure. In eradicating morbid doshas and malas i.e. waste products from our body, the disease is checked and ceased to progress. Constant therapeutic intervention will find regression of pathology in turn making the skin healthy and getting its normal color and complexion. Subsequently, symptoms like pain, itching etc. are weaned after some time and range of motion also improves. External massage concoctions like abhyangaand dharado have significant benefits which reduce pain and inflammation from the joints. Therefore, Vasti is an effective line of treatment for psoriatic arthritis and does combat it in the later stages.

External Treatments in Psoriatic Arthritis

While allopathic drugs are fast to respond, they can have severe reactions to the body and aggravation of symptoms. Clearly, the great healers of psoriatic arthritis come in handy in the form of Ayurvedic plans named Panchakarma. This method is good in moderate disease levels where the patient’s immunological response is good.

Though Ayurveda is the ultimate saviour, the patient must be compliant enough to follow the regimen in good discipline. Without a will, there’s no way and the results may alter!! Relief cannot be guaranteed by just starting the therapy, Adherence to the protocol is a must.

Another aspect of Ayurveda is proper lifestyle modifications and a good hygiene. Nutritious food, kempt behaviour and proper timing of eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, all need to be classified as per their calorie intake. Alcohol and smoking are definitely a no and conscious living is a key. Being choosy about delicious but harmful food is not a decent idea. Regular cleansing in the form of Panchakarma will help fillip your immunity and metabolism. Meditation and yoga are indeed two main aetiologies of Ayurveda and give a fruitful life meaning. Ultimately, Ayurveda gives you the path and it’s your wish to take it in your stride or just ignore the fruits of nature.

The cure for the condition lies in our own hands. Proper exercise, fitness, eating habits, sleep cycle have small yet meaningful effects on our body and soul. Avoiding stress is also integral. Yoga and stretching exercises also help with relaxation.

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammation of the skin and joints leading to acute joint pain, rough and dry skin areas and an itchy sensation. Even though the signs of psoriasis arthritis are visible on skin, it is not contagious and happens mostly by lifestyle and health factors. These can be social habits like smoking, drinking or even stress induced. Tattooing, certain medications or weather influence can also vitiate this symptom further
